One tool we use to build community, increase
learning, and implementation is the small group POD

In a small group, participants have the opportunity to interact, to actually learn the information, and more importantly, they are more likely to implement because of a phenomenon I call the Power of Discovery.

In my book The Power of Community, I share how I discovered the power of the small group. I now call those groups PODS. 

PODS stands for Power Of Discovery Systems

A few years ago, I noticed something at church that would change my life and my future forever.

Every Sunday after church, the members would get in their cars and leave. Many of them seemed to be the same each week. No change, no implementation, no transformation. The sermon was nice, well thought out, and in fact, it was the truth! The problem is that information alone doesn’t transform a person.

Then came Tuesday night home group. In this setting, the members of the small group all shared. More importantly, they helped each other and intentionally interacted with one another for the purpose of implementing what we learned from Scripture.

It was life-changing, and it created a sense of community. Shortly after that experience, I was introduced to an organization that specialized in small group dynamics. I’ve learned that implementation happens most effectively in the context of community.

As I shared in The People Principle, we need the support, encouragement, and accountability to become the people we want to be, so we can do the things we want to do, in order to have the life we want to have. I encourage you to read The Power of Community. It will help you become the leader you want to be and can transform the way you do life and business, and give you better results.

One of the tools we use to build community, to increase learning, and more importantly implementation is the small group. In a small group, participants have the opportunity to interact to actually learn the information; and more importantly, they are more likely to implement because of a phenomenon I call the Power of Discovery.

As participants interact, they discover what they need to do rather than being told. You might say the principles are caught rather than taught. When this happens, there is a sense of ownership on the part of the participants, because it appears that it was their idea. Ownership of these principles is very powerful, as they are more likely to be acted on. And in today’s “don’t-tell-me-what-to-do culture,” it is even more vital to create this setting.

The purpose of the POD is to foster more effective communication. Over time these groups can move people from a sense of community to a true community experience of belonging and transformation. Unlike what happens in a traditional meeting, in which one person speaks to the group, interaction is encouraged in a POD meeting. These purpose-minded life support groups can be used for almost any reason—to reach company goals, keep a project moving forward, achieve personal goals, change habits, or develop skills or gifts.
