Hi, I’m Howard Partridge.  I’m originally from L.A. (Lower Alabama!). I grew up on welfare in Mobile, Alabama and there were 7 kids crammed in a in a little 600 square foot shack. The roof was so bad on that house that when it rained we had to get out all the pots and pans to catch the leaks!

I still remember getting Christmas presents from the social workers. When you grow up like that, how are you likely to turn out? For me, it was a long haired rebellious teenager. At 18, I got kicked out of the house.

I climbed on a Greyhound bus to Houston and arrived with 25 cents in my pocket. Eventually I became a professional waiter, but I always wanted my own business. But I still had no money. Until I met my wife who is from New Jersey.

Denise Concetta Antionette Pennella (now THAT’s Italian!). While in New Jersey a friend of the family was tooling around in a little red Mercedes convertible. He was my age (23 at the time). I wanted to know what he did, and I wanted to know if it was legal! I discovered that he owned his own business. Well, when you marry into an Italian family, you don’t get wedding presents. What do you get?

You get cash!

We got $3,000.00 in wedding money. As soon as we got back to Houston, I spent that money on starting my own business. My wife was really thrilled about that, let me tell you!!!

That’s when I started my first company out of the trunk of my car. After 13 long years, I found myself a slave to my business. If I went on vacation, I had the appointment book and cell phone with me. Much of the vacation was spent dealing with employees or clients back home.

Does your business have a dramatic impact on your personal life?

That’s when I learned two secrets that changed my life forever. In 1997, I read a book called The E-Myth by Michael E. Gerber. I learned that you have to work “on” your business instead of “in” it. I learned that you have to have systems in your business if you want it to run well. I went to my favorite place in the world – Destin, Florida and began working “on” my business.

By building systems in my business, I was able to transform it into a multi-million dollar enterprise. I created a referral marketing system that generates an average of $64k per month in automatic referrals in just one of my companies. I have 40 employees that love their work and the business is turnkey so I don’t have to be there.

About 15 years ago, I began sharing my secrets with other small business owners. I was speaking at a convention and shared the stage with Michael Gerber (the guy whose book changed my business life). Michael came and spoke at my conference. Since that first time, he has done several projects with me and I have had the pleasure of featuring best-selling authors such as New York Times Best Selling Author Dr. Joseph Michelli (author of The Starbucks Experience), and Bob Burg (author of The Go-Giver).

Then, I met a man with an unusual name… Zig Ziglar. Zig Ziglar is the most quoted motivational speaker on the planet. Zig came and spoke at my conference and I got the opportunity to meet his family. Before too long I was doing video webcasts for their Success 2.0 program. And now I am blessed, honored (and amazed!) that I am their exclusive small business coach.

I was quoted in Zig’s latest book and got to help Tom with the last chapter. Now Tom and I travel the world sharing the Born To Win message for Business Owners.
